Kangra

Kangra tea is a variety of black tea that is cultivated in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India.

Kangra tea is renowned for its unique flavor, which is attributed to the valley's cool climate, high altitude, and fertile soil.

 

Tea cultivation in Kangra has a rich history that dates back to the mid-19th century. In 1848, Dr. Jameson, a British botanist, conducted a thorough feasibility study of the region and determined that it was highly suitable for tea cultivation. Tea cultivation in Kangra began in 1850 with the planting of the first tea bushes, which led to the rapid growth of the tea industry in the region.

 

Currently, there are more than 5,900 tea gardens located in Kangra, which collectively span an area of around 2,312 hectares. The primary type of tea produced in Kangra is black tea, although there is also a limited production of green tea and white tea.

 

The Kangra region has an ideal climate for cultivating tea. The region experiences an average annual rainfall ranging from 270 to 350 centimetres, with a consistent distribution throughout the year. The temperature in Kangra falls within the ideal range of 15 to 25 degrees Celsius, creating optimal conditions for the growth of tea bushes.

 

The soil in Kangra is well-suited for tea cultivation as well. The soil contains a high amount of organic matter and exhibits excellent drainage. The tea bushes in Kangra are protected from pests and diseases due to the high altitude.

 

The process of cultivating Kangra tea requires a significant amount of labour. The tea bushes are planted in neat rows with a spacing of approximately 3 feet between each bush. Regular pruning is done on the bushes to encourage new growth. The leaves are harvested two to three times a year, specifically in the spring, summer, and autumn seasons.

 

The leaves undergo an initial process of withering, during which they are intentionally dried out for a brief period. This method aids in maintaining the tea's colour and flavour. The leaves are subsequently rolled, a process that breaks down the cell walls and releases the enzymes responsible for imparting flavour to tea. The leaves undergo oxidation, resulting in their brown coloration. The last step involves firing the leaves, which effectively halts the oxidation process and imparts the tea with its distinctive flavour.

 

Kangra tea is renowned for its smooth and mellow flavour. The taste of this product is mildly fruity and floral, likely influenced by the pine trees that thrive in the area. Kangra tea is commonly used as a blend with other teas to enhance its distinctive flavour. Additionally, it is utilised in the creation of a diverse range of beverages, including chai, iced tea, and smoothies.
